End the Password.
From 2019-2021, I worked at Mindpass, a seed stage cybersecurity startup headquartered in Boulder, CO.
Role: Jack of all trades, product strategy, general operations, design and development
Team: Mindpass staff, external design and business strategy consultants
Timeline: Full-time for 2019, part time until May 2021
Customer discovery and UX research
While working at Mindpass, I interviewed a number of potential customers to determine the existence and nature of the password problem. Such interviews focused on maintaining impartiality and limiting potential sources of responder bias. This research yielded key insights, such as the fact that schools are relatively insensitive to changes in electronic security and have higher switching costs than many large institutions. While we originally thought children’s enjoyment would drive adoption of Mindpass in schools, this turned out to be an incomplete assumption.
After conducting these interviews, I also observed and solicited feedback for various parts of the Mindpass user experience. Such UX testing helped us identify key improvements and also pre-existing strengths within the product. For example, we found most users were able to memorize a Mindpass that was used only a demo, making such memorization completely unintentional.
Web Presence Redesign
I worked with a Mindpass advisor and expert designer to completely reconstruct Mindpass’s web presence. Over the summer, we transitioned from a standard GoDaddy landing page to a fully customized and rebranded design. The new site is coded on AWS Cloud9 and hosted on Heroku. This transition not only transformed the site’s visual appeal but also gave us the flexibility to demo Mindpass technology to visitors.
One Pager promotional Materials
One of Mindpass’ greatest barriers to success is a complete understanding of the product. I synthesized a variety of product information into a single page, designed for visual appeal and simplicity. These documents were targeted at and distributed to potential investors and customers.
Videos
I worked to conceptualize, produce, and edit various promotional videos. We ultimately found these videos extremely valuable in communicating the nature of the product, as the concept is intrinsically simple while being technically complex.
Research
Neuroscientific
One of my first projects at Mindpass was conducting and synthesizing a though review of scientific evidence for or against various parts of the product. Given my background in Neuroscience and Human-Computer Interaction, this turned out to be a perfect onboarding project. I eventually drafted a multi-page scientific document which summarized this research and contextualized the Neuroscientific superiority of human spatial memory and the Mindpass product. We ultimately distributed the document to potential investors and enterprise customers.
